Пока тот или иной сегмент мировой экономики сохраняет креативность, человеческая раса может не бояться технического застоя, который в конце концов положит конец экономическому росту. В современном мире с его политической конкуренцией другие нации будут вынуждены не отставать от лидера. Такие психологические потрясения, как страхи, охватившие Запад после запуска первого советского спутника, служат средством от самодовольства и самоуверенности, характерных для тех обществ, в которых пресекались инновации.

Если мы хотим, чтобы экономисты и политики осознали этот принципиальный момент, то им следует изучать экономическую историю технических изменений. Парафразируя еще одно изречение из Карра, можно сказать: общество, переставшее интересоваться прежними успехами, вскоре утратит веру в свою способность к новым успехам.
